Climate Week is Britain’s biggest climate change campaign, inspiring a new wave of action to create a sustainable future. C3W events during this week include a public lecture, the launch of educational podcasts, a Cafe event on Fracking, and a talk to NRW on the recent IPCC report.

Henry Lamb

Numerous hypotheses linking climatic change to human physical and cultural evolution have been put forward in recent decades. In this talk, I will show how long lake-sediment records may contribute to testing these hypotheses. I’ll be using  examples from our recent work in Ethiopia, especially the 250,000 year palaeoenvironmental record from Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, and planned research in the Rift valley of southern Ethiopia.

Henry Lamb has worked on the environmental history of Ethiopia for nearly 20 years, working from lake sediment cores collected from across the country. His work on Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, showed that drought in the Ethiopian highlands almost certainly caused the Nile to cease flowing 17,000 years ago.   His current interest focuses on deciphering the ways in which climate change in East Africa may have influenced the emergence of early humans.

This event is part of the fourth series of lectures organised by C3W, the series continues in Aberystwyth until the Summer 2014.
